FRIDAY 16 MARCH 2012
We reviewed the chapters we had read for class today in The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow. It is important to understand that Thurid is a "fortune teller" of sorts, and that she predicts the future. She gives lots of foreshadowing whenever she "sings" her poems and riddles. Her character also adds to the plot! Poor Hiarandi, he certainly was unlucky and now he is dead! But at least he doesn't have to go answer to the Quarter Court or stand up in Althing where his cousin, Snorri, presides.
I hope all of you are planning to go to the Law Center with Mrs. Stacks, because it will make this book even easier to understand. Look at the defendant in the courtroom and picture that person as if it were Hiarandi. It will help you understand his distaste for the legal system of his time!
I want you to think about the Story Elements we studied last semester. Ask yourself these questions:
Who are the characters? Main? Supporting? Can you describe them? How do they act? What do they add to the plotline?
What is the plot? What is leading up to the climax? What are the supporting details you can remember that tell rising action?
What is the theme of this book? Details?
What is the main setting of this book? When is this book occuring?
What is the mood of this book?
Today we started on the comprehension worksheet you have for homework. I hope you paid attention in class today and you noticed 2 things: 1. the questions are in chronological order, and 2. the answers are in the book. Use your book!
