Class Notes

Tuesday February 28, 2012
Yay!  Everyone had their books in class today.  We started reading The Arabian Nights.  One thing we learned is that this book is filled with "cliffhangers."  The Sultan's new wife tells tales, but she always ends them just as day is breaking right in the most suspenseful part!  Then the Sultan and her sister have to wait until nightfall to hear how the plot is resolved!  She lives for at least 2002 nights and days! Very ingenious! How do you think her father feels about what his daughter is doing?  How about the townspeople?

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 29 February 2012     LEAP YEAR!!!
1. Read the rest of "The Merchant and the Genie"
2. Read the story of "Sinbad the Sailor"

BRING ARABIAN NIGHTS TO EVERY CLASS, PLEASE.

After checking our homework, we worked on  the discussion questions for the last few chapters of Son of Charlemagne.  If you didn't complete it before class was over, you must complete it over break.  I had hoped all of you would finish so your workload would be less, but all of you did not bring your book to class.  Please, until we start a new book, bring the latest book to class.
For the book report you have to do on Son of Charlemagne, follow the directions carefully.  Make sure you underline the title and don't forget the author!  You must write about the 2 main characters.  They are Charlemagne and Carl.  Start with either one, it doesn't matter.  Then you need to pick a 3rd character to write about.  Your choice.  When you write about the character, go back to your Story Elements notes and see what you should know about the characters from them.  Write that type of answer please.  You may also add your own analysis of those characters.  Action/Involvement means where/how did this character relate to the plot.  What was his/her role in the plot.  Setting/Place is for the entire book.  There will be more than one!  The "mood" refers to the overall mood of the book.  Again, consult your notes for the way to answer this one.  The questions about "problem", consult "Plot" in your notes.  Use the terminolgy of elements please.  Then your recommendation is in your own words.  What did you think of the book, why, be specific, please.  Use your book for all of these.  Go back in to the book for your answers.

Have a great Break!

Your assignment is:

Monday 27 February 2012
1. Book Report on Son of Charlemagne
2. Bring Arabian Nights to class on Tuesday.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!
After everyone had turned in the papers on The Golden Legend, we paid tribute to our mother's for Valentine's Day.  Moms, ask your student where your valentine card is if you haven't gotten it yet!  They had to come up with a poem or tribute to their Mom, write it out, then see if they could put a candy heart anywhere in the tribute.  If they could, as they wrote the tribute on the actual card, they were to glue a candy heart in the place for those words.  The student who used the most candy hearts correctly won a prize.  Noah got the prize with Luke, Sarah, and Rebeka not far behind.  Good job kids!
The new booklist was sent home today.  The next book we are going to read is Arabian Nights so we need to order the next book which is The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow.  This book needs to be in class after the break so you have enough time to order it if you do so right now.  The rest of the books we are going to be able to read this semester are on the list.  We have not completed the first semester in this book yet so we probably won't finish this history book this year. We will give it a good try though!
Any make up work that went home last Friday MUST come in this Friday.  After that I will NOT accept it.

We finished the Elements of Fiction today with the notes on flashback, foreshadowing, symbolism, and text elements.  I hope our activites in class will help you with your homework.  Go back over your notes before you start trying to find these plot elements in chapters 12 and 13.  Make sure what you choose fits the definition!  Remember to underline the sentence where you find the element so when you tell us where it is, you can immediately see it and read it to us.  Use a pencil, however, so you can erase it!  Please make sure to bring your book to class.

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 8 February 2012
1. Read chapters 12-13: Son of Charlemagne
2. Summary/Synthesis from Cornell Notes.  Answer the question.  Please put this on a separate sheet of paper.  Just list the element and the page number where it is located.

Class Notes

Friday February 3, 2012
In class on Friday we took the last of our literary elements notes.  These elements are very important, and you will be using them in all your literature classes from now on.  Please take the time to read over those notes and to learn what the different elements are.  We will be having a test on Literary Elements later in this quarter after we have become proficient using them and recognizing them.
Remember, on your worksheet for homework, that the one circle with nothing but lines needs to have: your name; the title of the book; and the author's name in that order, please.  The other circles are self explanatory.  You are only using one of the 2 chapters you have to read this weekend also.
On Tuesday we will discuss irony, flashbacks and foreshadowing.  Then we will find all these elements and their parts in everything we read!

Your assignments are:

Monday 6 February 2012
1. Read chapters 10&11: Son of Charlemagne.
2. Complete the Literary Elements worksheet using either chapter 10 or 11.
