Classroom assignments

Tuesday 29 November 2011
We discussed some of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. I hope you will read it again when you are in the 10th or 11th grade. Then we corrected the work that we had to do over break.  For those of you who chose NOT to do the work, it is a zero, except for Luke, who was absent.
Next, for those who remembered to bring their book to class, (only 2!!!) we looked at Anna Of Byzantium.  We looked at the map of the Byzantium Empire and at the family tree of Anna.  Remember this is a book of fiction, the author made up some of the things she writes about.  However, these people actually DID exist.
We looked at our history book at pg. 131 #3.  Using the Justinian Code laws we were given in class, we need to write a comparison paragraph.
You need to order the next 2 books now.  Because it is Christmas time, the UPS is swamped and the books may take longer than usual to arrive.  Please don't wait like some of you have been doing.  You guys are missing out on a lot of information because you are coming to class unprepared.

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 30 November 2011
1.Read chapters 1-5: Anna...
2. Answer discussion questions in complete sentences.
3. Do page 131: 24C: #3: Write a comparison paragraph.  (Remember, a paragraph has at least 7 sentences)

Thursday 1 December 2011
1. Read chapters 6-10: Anna...
2. Vocabulary work: Alphabetize words, then write the definitions.

NOTE:
ORDER NEXT 2 BOOKS NOW!!!

Classroon assignments

18 November 2011
After everyone presented their projects, either persuasion or sportscaster, we watched the video "Camelot."
Everyone had their next book, The middle Ages. It is NOT a very hard read but I think it will support what you saw in class today about the Middle Ages.  It covers all aspects of this time period.  You need to finish reading MArk Twain's book A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court this week.  You have 5 very detailed discussion questions to answer.  The answers may be as long as 1-2 paragraphs.  Think about your answers before you write, please.  Also, you have a worksheet of questions on the next book.  The questions go right along with the book, so keep them close as you read it.
You have reding to do over the break and I don't think that is too much to ask of students.  The questions are for Monday November 28.  Get your reading done this week so you will be redy to do your questions on Monday.
See you on the 29th!  Have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving.  Remember, you have a great deal to be thankful for!!

Order Anna of Byzantium today!!!  That book is due the week we get back from break.  Order it now, please.

Your assignments are:

Monday 28 November 2011
1. Finish A Connecticut Yankee...
2. Discussion questions: there are 5.  Answer them in complete sentences.  The answers are long.
3. Read The Middle Ages from beginning to end!
4. Discussion Questions worksheet: Answer the questions in complete sentences.  If you need more space,
    use another sheet of paper.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Class assignments

15 November 2011
After much confusion, we decided that your papers were at my house in the Hagia Sophia papers.  For most of you they were.  Some were missing!  I have emailed those people and I need that work on Friday.
We discussed a little of the book before we had to go to lunch.  I want you to get a feel for how the author is talking and why.  I hope our discussion today helped you to get a feel for the book.  If you feel like you are getting bogged down tryiong to decipher what Sandy is saying, just skim it for the details and keep going.  I think MArk Twain wanted the readers to see how these archaic people talked.  I think he might have overdone that!!
I hope everyone has ordered the book The Middle Ages by Jane Shuter.  I am going to ask you to read it over break.  The book is NOT long!  It is 28 pages long with LOTS of pictures and explanations.  I really think you will enjoy it!  You can read it in one sitting.  If you have younger brothers or sisters, they might like to hear you read it out loud!!!  Try it, you might enjoy it!  Anyway, you will have some work on that book for Monday after Thanksgiving, but not a lot, I promise!
In Literature on Friday we will be watching the movie "Camelot."

ORDER THE BOOK ANNA OF BYZANTIUM TODAY!!!

Your assignments are:

16 November 2011

3. Bring The Middle Ages to class on Friday.

Class assignment

Tuesday 8 November 2011
Everyone has their new book!  That is a first for this year!  Keep it up!  Tell your mom to order the next book this weekend, please!
We talked about the title, author and pertinent information about the book: A Connecticut Yankee.  We discovered that the titles of the chapters are numbered that way due to the Roman influence in the book!  I collected all the summaries.  I haven't looked at them formally but some of you wrote way too much!  Remember in a summary only the barest details are required!
We talked about "Mark Twain," who he was and why he wrote books the way he did.
Remember that on Friday we are going to the Veteran's Day parade!  We will help Mrs. Machtley get her classes to and from the parade. However, I am going to take up the work assigned today before we go to the parade, so you need to have the vocabulary completed, please. Work on it this weekend because you don't want to miss out on anything!
We will read 11 chapters at a time.  The chapters are not that long. Check them out!  Remember, the book has many humorous parts in it.  Try and find them as you read.

Your homework is:

Wednesday/Thursday 8,9 November 2011
1. Read A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court"  chapters 1-11.
2. Vocabulary Work: Write the definition for each word on notebook paper. You copied the words today in class.  They began with palimpset!

ORDER THE NEXT BOOK TODAY: THE MIDDLE AGES by Jane Shuter .  Due: November 18.

Class Assignments

4 November 2011
I sure hope everyone's book came in since you have homework in it.  If yours did not come in, I think you can go on Amazon and find all the information I requested.  Bring those books to class on Tuesday, please.  Remember to read over the Cornell notes we took in class on how to write a summary.  Also, read over the hand-out I gave to you on this same topic.  Writing a summary is not hard, but it takes practice!  We all have a tendency to want to write all the information we have, but in a summary, you don't!  Remember, it is the main idea, and the details that support it.  Do not put your opinion in the summary. The reader does not care what you thought about the piece!  That is for book reports and critiques!
If you got the book, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, please begin reading it.
I gave you your report cards, please get them signed and bring them back Tuesday.  You will get a daily extra credit grade of 100 if you do.  You do not get any credit if it is late (brought in on Friday).
Everyone turned in the book report, but everyone did not turn in the final copy of the St. Benedict paper.  If you did not, then you need to turn it in on Tuesday or it is a zero.  I only got 5 of those papers so 2 of you did not turn them in. That is not a good way to start the new grading period.

The homework assignments are:

8 November 2011
1. Pg. 127: 23C: #1: a and c:
    A. Read the poem assigned.
    B. Read the handout on "Writing a Summary"
    C. Read the Cornell notes over
    D. Read the poem again, following steps 1-3 from handout.
    E. Write the summary. Prrofread it!
2. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Using your book, answer these questions.  They do NOT have to be in complete sentences:
     A. Title?

     C. Publisher?
     D. Copyright date?
     E. How many chapters?
     F. Why are there Roman Numerals used for chapter numbers?

ORDER THE NEXT BOOK, THE MIDDLE AGES, TODAY!!!

Class assignments

Tuesday 1 November 2011
Don't forget that Friday is Sarah's birthday and she is bringing cupcakes.  Today we discussed the rest of Patrick Missionary to Ireland. He was quite a remarkable man and a man of exteme faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.  What a role model for us!  I hope you enjoyed this book.  I did and it was good to learn that he truly had nothing to do with running the snakes out of Ireland!
We got our assignment for our book report on St. Patrick...  Remember that I will not be happy with a carelessly prepared paper. Do your assignment in pencil on notebook paper, then transfer your information to the shamrock.  You might want to write it on the shamrock lightly in pencil then trace it with the pen.  If you choose to do this, you might want to gently erase the pencil marks if it is distracting.  Be careful.  Remember that each error or scratch-over is going to take points off your paper.
DON'T FORGET TO ORDER THE NEXT BOOK, A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT. IT MUST BE IN CLASS ON NOVEMBER 8.
