Class Notes

Tuesday January 31, 2012
Today, we finished up the information on the Lterary Elements of tone and style.  I hope you all got all the notes off the overhead.  If you didn't, let me know and I will let you copy them from the overhead Friday.  I hope each of you paid attention to the examples we got from our book on Charlemagne.  You will be asked to do that again and again this year.  It is very important. The last terms we have are "Idea or Theme". We will cover that on Friday.

Your assignments are:

Wednesday/Thursday 1/2 February 2012
Read chapters 9 and 10: Son of Charlemagne

Remember to look for all the elements we have learned about so far, but mainly PLOT/CLIMAX.

Class Notes

Friday January 27, 2012
We had a problem with our understanding of modern women of our same culture and ethnicity.  Ethnicity is the "race" you are.  For most of us we are Anglo-saxon, caucasions, or European caucasions.  Our governor is of Indian descent.  Her parents came from the country of India.  This is NOT the same thing as Native American.  Also, for us, modern day women would be a woman born in the 20th or 21st century.  Someone born after 1900 would be in this category.
We took notes on the Literary Elements of Point of View and Tone today.  Our homework comes from the Summary/synthesis question at the end of our Cornell Notes on Point of View.  Now we have learned about 4 elements: character, setting, point of view and tone.  You need to read over all these notes this weekend because, in the future, we will have a test on this information.  If you were one of the students who could not find their notes, please do so this weekend and have all of them in class on Tuesday.  It is important that you keep up with these handouts and notes.

Repot cards were given out.  They need to come back on Tuesday, signed.

Parents, if you have questions about the report cards or need copies, please call me at 524-8034. Please do not call me on my cell because I don't answer or chack that phone with any regularity.

Today Payton and Matthew could not stay on topic.  Payton had his camera and Matthew wanted to talk about anything other than the lesson.  Maybe that is why Payton could not find his homework and Matthew had to keep asking where we were and what I had asked the class to do.  Boys, you really need to pay attention and stay on task. Class, remember I am over the distractions.  We got a lot more done today than usual, but we would get out at the correct time if I didn't have to repeat myself and ask you to stop talking.  While it was better today, it needs to get much better.  Let's all work on that, please.

Your assignments are:

Monday 30 January 2012
1. Summary/synthesis: Using Son of Charlemagne , write down: Narrator, speaker, person, and perspective (point of view).  What is the tone of this book so far?
2. Read chapters 6&7: Son of Charlemagne
3. Vocabulary work: write definition and sentence of your own with each word. (6)
4. Discussion questions: answer each in complete sentences.
5. Get report card signed. Bring to class on Tuesday.

Class Notes

Tuesday January 24, 2012
Because we were so behind in History, we had to rush through Literary Elements.  There are 5 main elements that we are going to be exploring for the next few weeks.  Some of them you are going to know how to recognise easily, others will be new to you.  That is why we need notes, so you can go back over what we did in class to refresh your memory.  That is a very important element in studying; going over what was covered in class.  So before you begin the handout, go back over your notes on characters.
I am sorry some of you are finding Son of Charlemagne "boring".  That tells me you are not reading the novel very carefully.  This author has really attempted to attract both males and females in this book. This book is not difficult to read either.  I hope you will give it another chance.
You have a good bit of homework for the next two days.  It is because I have added the elements to our class time.  I plan to give you 2 elements each session, so this won't last very long at all, but I think they are very important in helping you to analyze what you are reading, both now and in the future.  As you get in to the high school classes the teachers will expect you to be able to analyze characters, setting, plot, theme and point of view.  This IS school and there are some things you must learn at each level.
Notice I have changed the summary from 3 to 1 woman in your assignments.  Also remember, you can read these novels anywhere and any time.  Read them at night just before you go to bed or while you are riding in the car or waiting for supper!  That will free you up during the time you are "in school" during the day to get all your work done.

Your assignments are:

Wednesday 25 January 2012
1. Read Son of Charlemagne: cps. 4-5.
2. Pg. 179:31C:#2: REad the directions.  Choose 1 woman of modern times who represents your culture and ethnicity and  research and write a summary on her.  Include her life and accomplishments.  Only 3 sentences.
3. Main character worksheet

Thursday 26 January 2012
1. Vocabulary work.
2. Discussion questions on Charlemagne.

Class Notes

Friday 20 January 2012
You should have turned in your rough draft on the 3 religions today.  It was so good to realise that only 1 did not have the book due today in class.   I hope you enjoy the Son of Charlemagne.  Please as you get ready to read, find your hand-outs on how to write a summary so you can know what to look for as you read.
I enjoyed reading your book reports on Beowulf and Saladin.  You all did a nice job for the most part.  Some of you were very creative! Thanks!
You will get all your papers back om Tuesday.   The final copies will have a grade and the rough drafts will be ready for you to write a final copy.  I should have everyone's paper on Kaaba.  The rough drafts you got back today, yes, Luke, if you follow all the directions I gave you and correct all your mistakes you should get a 100.  Matthew, if you have any more questions about the corrections on your paper, call me.  If you will look in the margins, you should find what I meant about the correction.

Your assignments are:

Monday 23 January 2012
1. Read "Author's Note" and chapters 1-3: Son of Charlemagne
2. Write a short summary about each chapter on the handout I gave you.  This should be just 1 sentence, if at all possible.
3. Write final copy of "Women in China"
4. Get all missing work in.

Class Notes

Tuesday 17 January 2012
Each of you got a list of the books for 2nd semester.  Remember, we are NOT going to order or read all of them.  I had you check the ones we are definately going to read.  Before we get to thet list, however, we have 2 books already that we need to read.  Please bring BOTH books to class Friday: Son of Charlemagne and Arabian Nights. I hope all of you turned in your paper on Kaaba.  If you did not, then you must turn it in Friday without fail.  All of you got a small paper last week on the work you were missing according to my gradebook.  If you have not already taken care of this, you need to do so soon.  The grading period ends on the 27th so any incomplete work at that time receives a zero and some of you cannot afford a zero.
I would like to request that these things NOT come to class again: cell phones, IPads, headsets, hats, or anything else that distracts us.  You may leave them in your bookbags, but I do not want to see them in class again.  If you have these things in class again,  I will be forced to call your parents.  Please be respectful fo the fact that this IS class and a time to learn and exchange ideas, not discuss the latest thing on your devices.
In order to complete the assignment i gave you in class you will need to use page 170: 30B, the 3 comparisons we did together in class last week, as well as what you completed in class today.  I want your rough draft as well as the answers to the questions on page 170 for Judaism and Islam.  Staple your rough draft on top of this paper, please.
Don't forget to bring your next 2 books to class on Friday, please.

Your assignments are:

Tuesday/Wednesday 18/19 January 2012
1. Finish page 170: 30B if you have not already done so.
2. Write a rough draft Compare/Contrast paper on the 3 main religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islamic. Remember to double space whether you write it or type it.
3. Bring 2 books to class on Friday.

Class Notes

Friday 13 January 2012
After starting our notes on the differences between Judaism, Islam, and Christianity in history, we completed them in Literature.  We looked again at Saladin to see where what we learned in History coinsided with the book, supported the book or if they were at odds.  The book paints a pretty picture of Islam, which is important in our development of our own beliefs.  Books like this, I believe, help us to strengthen what we hold as true.  Just keep those notes for now because we will refer to them at a later date.  Keep the Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed with those notes, please.
I hope all of you turned in the rough drafts on the Women in China as well as your final copies of Shintoism vs. Christianity and the Pope's clothes.  I will get those back to you on Tuesday.

Remember to order the next 2 books:  Arabian Nights and Son of Charlemgne.

Your assignments are:

Monday 16 January 2012
1.Pg. 165:29C: #1: Google Kaaba.  When you find a site with the most information, answer the questions in the activity.  If there is more information on the topic of the question, write that also.  While you are on that site, get a photocopy of the Kaaba.  Then, with the "notes" you took, write a final copy descriptive paper on the Kaaba.  It is one paragraph long and one page, typed, single space, starting at the top after you type your name, date, and subject.  If you write it, it must be in blue or black ink, and a page and 1/2.  This paper is a final copy, no mistakes.  Have someone proofread it for you before you decide you are through, please!  Don't forget to attach your photocopy of the Kaaba to your final copy.
2. Order the next 2 books.

Class Assignments

Tuesday 10 January 2012
I hope all of you turned in your "Shintoism/Christianity" final copy.  You also got back rough drafts on the compare/contrast paper on popes' clothes.  You need to write the final copy of that and get it back to me.  If I told you to provide more information, google both and get the information.  Then have someone proofread your paper before you write the final copy.
For the homework for Friday, I am going to give you the questions I hastily put on the board for you.
Women in China
1. Describe women in ancient China.  Tell what they could do, education, clothes, and the way they were
treated by the men in China.
2. Describe the women in the Bible during Jesus' life.  Tell what they could do, education, clothes, and the way they were treated by the men at that time. (Leave Jesus out of this paragraph)
3. Describe modern women in China.  Tell what they can do, education, clothes, and the way they are treated in today's society. (Don't forget to include a sentence or two about abortion)
4. Describe how Jesus treated women of his time.  Cite examples: ie: Matt.5:6.
5. How does all this make YOU feel?  Did you like the way women were treated, then and now? What
emotions did you feel as you read these accounts?  What did you  like, dislike?  What conclusions can you draw from this research?
Each of these requirements should result in a paragraph, so this paper should be 6 paragraphs.  Remember you must have an opening paragraph.  Your closing paragraph is #5.  Please double space this paper and we will use it as your rough draft.
